Brahmas beat IceRays

By Rick Mauch
Fort Worth Star-Telegram

FORT WORTH - The Fort Worth Brahmas only have four victories this season in the Western Professional Hockey League, but half of them have come against the Corpus Christi IceRays.
The Brahmas improved to 4-14 with a shootout loss as they defeated the IceRays, 6-1, last night at the Fort Worth Convention Center. In four games, the IceRays (9-9-1) have beaten the Brahmas once in regulation, lost twice in regulation and defeated the Brahmas in a shootout.
The victory was the first of the season at home for the Brahmas, who had lost their first seven in Fort Worth. The IceRays fell to 3-5 on the road this season and had a four-game winning streak snapped.
"I'm amazed the Brahmas' record is what it is," IceRays coach Taylor Hall said. "Every time we play against them it is a tough game. Tonight, they took it to us."
In their history, Fort Worth and Corpus Christi have combined for 10 shootouts. There was no danger of that happening last night as the Brahmas took command of the game early.
Justin Cardwell scored two goals, the first on a power play, with a pair of assists from Ross Harris, as the Brahmas led 3-0 after the first period. Harris would add a goal in the second period as the Brahmas increased their lead to 5-0 and finished the scoring with 57 seconds left in the game with his second goal of the game.
Kurt Wickenheiser broke the drought for the IceRays with a goal at 9:50 of the second period. It was his 22nd point of the season on 11 goals and 11 assists. Matt Sharuga assisted for his third point of the
season, while Kevin Solari registered his fifth point with an assist.
"We've got a game plan every night and when we stick to it, we usually win," Hall said. "We didn't tonight and this league is too good to win if you don't stick to your game plan. If you don't play well in this league, you lose, I don't care what the other team's record is."
The IceRays got off 26 shots, but found Brahmas goaltender Rob Laurie practically impenetrable. The Brahmas managed 32 shots.
The IceRays were unable to get anything going on the power play, failing to convert on three opportunities. They killed six of eight Brahmas power plays.
The IceRays are 16-for-99 on power plays this season. Opponents are 23-for-128.
Corpus Christi will take the ice at 7:05 p.m. today, facing the Moccasins in Monroe.
