IceRays shut out against Moccasins
Owen returns from injury to blank Corpus Christi
By Hillary Smith The Monroe News-Star
MONROE, La. - Monroe goaltender Clint Owen stopped 32 shots in his first appearance in more two weeks to lead the Moccasins to a 2-0 shutout of the Corpus Christi IceRays Friday night at the Monroe Civic Center Arena.
The loss was Corpus Christi's second in as many games and drops the IceRays to 9-10-1 (19 points). Corpus Christi wraps up a five-game road trip with consecutive games against the Tupelo T-Rex today and Sunday. Today's game is scheduled for 7 p.m., with Sunday's matchup set to start at 2.
After taking a puck in the forehead against Amarillo, Owen had been waiting and watching from the bench while fellow goalie Marco Emond racked up a 5-2 record and just two goals per game over the last seven contests.
"I have been anxious to get in the net," said Owen, who recorded his second shutout of the season. "But at the same time I was happy for Marco because he was playing unbelievable. I can't take anything away from him. I just had a feeling that it would be today."
The Moccasins hadn't scored in over 112 minutes until Ryan Cirillo found Jason Carriere camped just to the right of the crease in the middle of the third period.
Carriere's goal against Corpus Christi goaltender Jason Carey gave Monroe a 1-0 lead, and Corey Smith sealed the game later in the period with an empty-net floater with less than a minute to play. Carey finished with 27 saves.
The win also raised Owen's save percentage to .918.
