Albertson's plans convenience store, gas station

Rosita's Mexican Restaurant plans to open third location by Thanksgiving

Albertson's is building a convenience store/gasoline station at its Huntington Square Shopping Center location.
Although the concept of pairing a convenience store/gasoline station with a supermarket is relatively new in this area, the Idaho-based company has been doing it since 1997. Its major South Texas competitor, H.E. Butt Grocery Co., began selling gasoline at H-E-B stores in 1995. H.E. Butt's approach does not include an accompanying convenience store.
At 3,000 square feet, the convenience store to be located at the corner of Saratoga Boulevard and South Staples Street is larger than other convenience stores in the chain, said Rick Hoffman, Alberson's district manager in San Antonio. This will allow enough room for the store to have a sandwich shop and a gourmet coffee counter. The site also has a car wash. The grocery company now tries to incorporate gasoline stations into the store when there is enough space, Hoffman said.
The store is expected to open in January. Hoffman said there are no immediate plans to build a gas station at the Albertson's on South Padre Island Drive. NAI Cravey Real Estate Services Inc. and ArcRealty represented Hunt Development in the sale of the 1.3-acre property.
   Rosita's new location
Johnny and Rosita Rodela, who founded Rosita's Mexican Restaurant, are hoping to open their third location in time for Thanksgiving.
The restaurant is located at 5253 Staples St., a site that used to be Tequila Grill and Woody's Steak and Seafood Grille.
Rosita Rodela said that the new location will serve the made-from-scratch food that has been popular at the original Rosita's at 2319 Morgan Ave. since July 1985.
The Rodelas opened their second store at 4402 Ayers St. a year and a half ago.
The new location will be a little different because it may have new items such as chile rellenos and cabrito on the menu, she said.
   New home for Blue Ribbon
Blue Ribbon Realty is also planning a move before the holiday season. The Annaville real estate offices are expected to move two doors down to a larger location.
Moving into the 2,000-square-foot offices will not only mean twice as much space, but much higher visibility at the corner of Leopard and Martine streets, said Donna Nell, owner. It also has enough signage that it's easy to find even if a person doesn't have an address in hand. Nell believes this will attract more walk-in business to her 5-year-old company.
"We're going to have so much signage it's going to be impossible to miss us," she said.
   Calallen medical facility
Cambridge Healthcare Development Corp. opened the 34,000-square-foot Northwest Regional Medical Plaza in Calallen. The two-level building at 13725 Northwest Blvd. includes offices for physicians specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, family practice, cardiology, general surgery and pediatrics.
Dallas-based Cambridge Healthcare Development develops and manages medical office buildings around the country.
Fulton/Coastcon Construction is the general contractor for the $5 million building. Architects for the development are Collins Reisenbichler Architects of Dallas and Cotten/Landreth Architects of Corpus Christi.
   AmeriCredit to open office
AmeriCredit is opening an 1,800-square-foot office on the seventh floor of the south tower of One Shoreline Plaza, according to Joe Adame & Associates. The lease for the office is set for Jan. 1.
Fort Worth-based AmeriCredit specializes in servicing car loans for customers who cannot qualify for financing through other financing sources. Branch offices help auto dealers make credit decisions and process loan funding.
The company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange and manages a $7.4 billion loan portfolio.
