IceRays scrape past Outlaws in extended shootout session

Hearn, the seventh Corpus Christi overtime sniper, nets second goal of game to lift IceRays to 2-1 win

By Jonathan Miller
San Angelo Standard-Times

In an intensely physical battle, where both teams beat up on one another for the entire 60 minutes, the Corpus Christi IceRays emerged with a 2-1 shootout victory over the San Angelo Outlaws.
With the teams tied at 2-2 in a shootout which would extend to seven shooters, Jamie Hearn, who netted Corpus' lone goal during regulation, beat Outlaws' goaltender Sergei Tkachenko with a blazing slap shot.
When the game's No. 1 star, Corpus netminder Jason Carey, turned away Carl Paradis' effort on the ensuing penalty shot, the IceRays had survived to earn their sixth win of the season.
With the triumph, the IceRays improved to 6-7-1 on the season. San Angelo fell to 6-6-2, securing a point for the regulation tie.
After starting the season 3-0, the IceRays had been in a nosedive over the past three weeks. Before Saturday night's game, Corpus had lost eight of its last 10. The Outlaws, on the other hand, started the game at the .500 mark, but riding high after earning a quality 3-2 victory over Tupelo, one of three teams atop the Eastern Conference.
Both teams had ample scoring opportunities in the first period, including two power-play opportunities, but neither could capitalize. Solid defense and some superb goaltending, espeically from Tkachenko, left the game scoreless after the first twenty minutes.
Corpus Christi finally ended the scoreless tie six minutes into the second period. On an even-strength rush, Dustin McArthur dumped a pass back to Hearn. From just outside the left faceoff circle, Hearn unleashed a scorching slap-shot that whistled past Tkachenko.
Less than one minute later, San Angelo found itself with a two-man advantage, when Kelvin Solari and Matt Shagura were both sent to the penalty box within 17 seconds of one another. Carey turned away at lease six Outlaw shots from point-blank range, though, helping the IceRays kill off the infractions.
After the penalties expired, though, McKinnon got the Outlaws on the board, beating Carey with a wrister on a breakaway. On the play, Skeeter Moore led McKinnon behind the IceRays' defense with a deft two-line pass. Corri Moffat was credited with the second assist on McKinnon's seventh tally of the season.
