IceRays suffer 8-1 thumping at hands of Ice Bats, drop to 5-8-1
By Jason Cohen Austin American-Statesman
Corpus Christi goalie Jason Carey never knew what hit him. Apparently, it was Troy Stonier, but the Austin Ice Bats rookie moves so fast that Carey will never know for sure.
Stonier scored three goals and set up two more before the first period was over as Austin jumped out to a 5-0 lead and suffocated the Ice Rays, 8-1, on Friday night at the Travis County Exposition Center.
Roger Lewis, who joined the Bats in February after being waived by Corpus, scored lit the lamp twice and assisted once, and Bobby Brown added two goals and two assists. Bats goalie Bryan McMullen worked hard down the stretch, facing twice as many shots in the third period as he did in the other two combined.
Austin is tied for first in the WPHL Eastern Division, improving its record to 8-3-1. Corpus Christi falls to 5-8-1.
Austin has always had a quick-strike offense against Corpus. In the 1999 season opener, the Bats scored six goals in the first period in a game last December, Austin earned a 6-5 shootout win by erasing a 5-1 third-period deficit in just 4 minutes, 20 seconds.
The Bats outshot the Ice Rays 16-3 in the first period, refusing to allow Corpus beyond the blue line. Meanwhile, Austin's forwards used the neutral zone as a launching pad. Kelly Smart made it 1-0 when he gathered in a pass from Stonier, blew past his man at the right board and backhanded the puck past Carey at 5:01.
At 10:47, Brett Seguin hit Stonier flying through the middle. Stonier stutter-stepped before scoring on Carey. It was Seguin's 109th career assist in an Austin uniform.
Lewis made it 3-0 at 14:55, with assists from Brown and Stonier. Minutes later, Stonier intercepted a clearing pass from Shawn Frappier, moved the puck to Seguin at the boards and headed for the right post.
