IceRays win on OT goal
Tseplis’ score tips scales, 4-3
By Javier Becerra Caller-Times
Talyor Hall almost saw another game slip away.
Fortunately for the Corpus Christi coach, No. 1 goalie Jason Carey was back in front of the net for the IceRays.
The Corpus Christi IceRays broke a three-game losing skid with a 4-3 shootout win over the Fort Worth Brahmas Tuesday night at Memorial Coliseum.
Gatis Tseplis scored the lone goal in the overtime period, and goalie Jason Carey - in his first appearance since Oct. 28 - stopped all five Fort Worth shots.
The victory kept the IceRays from falling any deeper in the Western Professional Hockey League Eastern Division standings, improving to 5-7-1. It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Brahmas, who remain in last place in the Eastern Division at 2-11-0.
Scoring opportunities came early in the game for both teams.
Fort Worth went on a power play a half-minute into the game, which turned into four-on-four for 35 seconds after Ben Gorewich was called for obstruction tripping.
With Gorewich in the penalty box, the IceRays had a one-man advantage for one minute. Kurt Wickenheiser broke through Fort Worth's defense, but goalie Rob Laurie denied the IceRays' leading scorer, whose shot was deflected over the top of the net.
Less than five minutes later, Corpus Christi's Matt Van Horlick faked a shot from the left and dumped the puck on a center pass to Dustin McArthur. Laurie bit on the fake, leaving the goal wide open, but McArthur couldn't get a handle on the puck and his shot slid just to the right of the net.
Fort Worth went on a two-man advantage with 7:27 left in the opening period after IceRay forwards Dennis Shiryaev and Matt Sharuga were both called for penalties, but Carey and the IceRays thwarted the Brahmas' offensive attack.
Both Laurie and Carey continued their dominance in the second period.
The IceRays got in close for several shots during a power play early in the second period. But Laurie, who has Fort Worth's only two wins this season, turned away everything the IceRays served up.
Corpus Christi finally broke Laurie's defense with 1:30 left in the second period.
Playing the puck behind the net, Tseplis dished it off to Wickenheiser, who sneaked around the left side of the net. Wickenheiser pushed the puck across the top of the crease to Alex Kholomeyev, easily beating Laurie for his fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for the IceRays.
Matt Sharuga gave Corpus Christi a 2-0 cushion at the 4:24 mark of the third period with his first goal of the year.
This time, Fort Worth was able to answer back, as Sean Brady beat Carey to cut the IceRays' lead to 2-1.
The IceRays again took a two-goal advantage with just under 10 minutes left to play on a goal by McArthur.
