Wright named Isles' interim assistant coach
With program for a year and a half, graduate assistant moves up to fill Green's shoes
By Mark Zuckerman Caller-Times
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi didn't have to look far to find a replacement for its vacant assistant coaching position. The answer, it turns out, was right in front of the Islanders' eyes.
Greg Wright, who had been a graduate assistant with the men's basketball program the last year and a half, was named interim assistant coach Monday by head coach Ronnie Arrow.
Wright, 31, fills the position left vacant when Steve Green left to become head coach at South Plains Junior College last month. He will hold the interim assistant coach title through the end of this season, at which time Arrow said he will look to make a permanent hiring.
"He gets along well with the players," Arrow said. "He's part of the family here, and the guys respect him."
A native of San Antonio and a 1987 graduate of Converse Judson High School, Wright received his bachelor's degree from Texas A&M, where he worked as a student assistant on the men's basketball team.
Prior to joining the A&M-Corpus Christi staff in June 1999, he coached at Houston's MacArthur High School.
In addition to his previous responsibilities of film exchange, game preparation, opponent scouting and on-campus recruiting, Wright will now be a part of the Islanders' off-campus recruiting efforts.
"Coach gave me the opportunity to come in as a volunteer assistant," Wright said. "That's what I wanted to do, and now it's paid off."
Wright joins Arrow and fellow assistant Bobby Taylor, who was hired on October 5, on A&M-Corpus Christi's coaching staff. The Islanders face All-Army in their exhibition opener Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum.
