IceRays struggles continue
By Greg Rajan Temple Daily Telegram
BELTON - It hasn't been a November to remember for the Corpus Christi IceRays.
Corpus Christi dropped its straight game Saturday, as the Central Texas Stampede waxed the IceRays 5-0 at the Bell County Expo Center for its fourth win in five tries against its South Texas rival.
Center Chris Johnston led the Stampede (4-3-2) attack with two goals.
Linemate Ron Newhook added three assists and goalie Matt Barnes stopped 35 shots for the Stampede.
Corpus Christi (4-7-1) shots to pick up his second straight shutout of the IceRays.
IceRays goalie Eddy Skazyk, a Stampede tormenter last season with seven wins against Central Texas, was torched early by the Stampede.
Johnston started the scoring with a power-play goal at just 1:25 of the first period, beating Skazyk with a wrist shot from the right circle.
Johnston then scored from in close for another power-play at 6:31. A Peter Campbell shorthanded goal made it 3-1 early in the second before the floodgates opened late in the period.
Dave MacIntyre and Peter Zurba scored at 13:25 and 16:47, respectively, to chase Skazyk to the bench in favor of recently signed backup Mike Szkodzinski.
Zurba's goal was symbolic of the IceRays' night, as his shot from the far right wing corner went off Skazyk and into the net.
Barnes then preserved his shutout with his best save of the game, a sliding two-pad stop on a Matt Sharuga one-timer from the left wing with four minutes remaining in the third period.
Saturday's game also had the familiar Central Texas-Corpus Christi hostility. Stampede defenseman John Murphy mixed it up with 6-7 IceRays winger Dallas Anderson, the WPHL's tallest player. Few - if any - punches were thrown during their fight. While the officials separated the two afterward, Anderson went after Murphy and was assessed a match penalty. Match penalties are automatically reviewed by the WPHL.
