Minnesotan breaks nationwide girls' record in high school pole vaulting

Associated Press

ALBERTVILLE, Minn. - Stacie Manuel, a Willmar High School sophomore, set a national record in the girls' pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 4 inches in the Section 2AA meet.
According to the Minnesota State High School League, Manuel broke the previous record of 13 feet set by Shannon Agee of Helena, Mont., in 1998.
Manuel cleared the bar on her second try Thursday.
"It's been my goal all season," she said of her record attempt. "I've been coming closer and closer."
She qualified May 16 for the Olympic trials in Sacramento, Calif., in July with a jump of 13-0¼ in Brainerd.
The wind was so strong Wednesday, the day of the meet, the pole vault was carried over to Thursday.
The record will have to be formally approved by the National Federation's Records Committee during its annual summer meeting in July in Minneapolis.
