Former San Patricio sheriff also worked as GPISD trustee, farmer, store operator

Former San Patricio County Sheriff and longtime Gregory resident Homer Rothwell Hunt died Friday. He was 94.
Hunt, whose family moved to San Patricio County more than 100 years ago, was born in a cotton field near Gregory in 1906.
"The only time he left home was to be a deputy U.S. Marshal in San Marcos," said Hunt's son, Pat. "He was gone for less than a year."
San Patricio County Sheriff Leroy Moody knew Hunt for about 40 years. "He hired me as a dispatcher in 1961," Moody said. "He was a quiet, understanding individual."
Hunt's son, who is the girls' basketball coach at Aransas Pass High School, said his father was proud of his employees. Hunt hired both Moody and Bob Horn, the current sheriff of Bee County, around the same time. "They were just two young guys right out of high school," he said. "They must have liked it because they stayed."
As well as serving as sheriff, Hunt served as a trustee of the Gregory-Portland Independent School District. At one time, he also operated a grocery store, was a farmer and an independent oil jobber. After retiring, he became a crossing guard and a bus driver for the Gregory-Portland I.S.D. He was a member of the Rotary Club and a former deacon at the First Baptist Church of Gregory.
"He was a very Christian gentleman," Moody said. "He was a gentleman's gentleman."
Survivors include a son, Pat Hunt, of Ingleside on the Bay; a daughter, Dorothy McKamie of Memphis, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Gregory. Burial will be in Gregory Cemetery.
Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes & Crematory in Aransas Pass are handling arrangements.
