Visiting Navy official notes strong local support of military

By Deborah Martínez
Caller-Times

The Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy visited Corpus Christi Friday and said he was extremely impressed with the Navy's strong relationship with the South Texas community.
William J. Cassidy Jr. said the visit made him realize how vital South Texas is to the Navy's mission and the nation as a whole.
"I've been gratified to see the depth of the support that the people of Corpus Christi have for the Navy," Cassidy said.
Cassidy is in Corpus Christi this weekend to serve as commodore of tonight's Buccaneer Days Illuminated Night Parade.
Friday, he toured the Port of Corpus Christi, Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and Naval Station Ingleside.
Cassidy also attended a luncheon at the Townclub with county commissioners, city council members, Port of Corpus Christi officials and other local dignitaries such as Rear Adm. Jose L. Betancourt Jr., commanding officer of the Mine Warfare Command.
City Council member Arnold Gonzales said he thought Cassidy's visit was positive for Navy Region South Texas.
"His visit is really important to us because of the prominence of the Navy here and the possibility for base closures everywhere," Gonzales said.
"He was happy here, and that is good for us."
