IceRays players to host 'Training with the Pros'
Dry-land camp gives youths a chance to work out with McArthur, Wingfield, Van Horlick and others
From staff and correspondent reports
IceRays' teammates Dustin McArthur, Brad Wingfield and Quinton Van Horlick are giving back to the community this summer by hosting "Training with the Pros."
The camp is a dry-land camp that offers a peek into the life of hockey professionals.
"We hope to get the kids introduced to hockey," Wingfield said. "The guys that are doing this have signed for next season and this gives us a chance to get the kids involved."
The sessions will include a sample of their training, scaled down versions of the pushups, running and leg exercises, and other drills the members perform daily. Games such as ball hockey, relays, soccer and kickball also are on the agenda.
"The emphasis will be on discipline, games and teamwork," Wingfield said. "It gives people the chance to interact and hang out with the players."
Other IceRays, like Geoff Bumstead and Kurt Wickenheiser, are scheduled to make an appearance.
The camp will be divided into two different age groups; six to 10 year olds will have sessions at 6 p.m., 11-and-up will have their camp from 7-8 p.m.
"Parents will also have the chance to come out and talk to the players and ask questions," Wingfield said.
The camp begins May 8 and runs through June 9. Participants have the option of signing up for anywhere from a week to the entire five weeks of the camp. Fees range from $30 to $125.
The next registration will be tonight at the Youth Hockey Banquet at Ray High School from 6:30-9 p.m.
