CCISD hopeful seeks renewed focus on students
From staff reports

Tony C. Diaz, a former assistant superintendent with the Corpus Christi Independent School District, said he is running for an at-large seat on the CCISD school board because he wants to shift the district's focus away from a financial controversy and back onto the students.
He sees a major challenge as lowering the district's dropout rate. "My question is what are we doing to head off youngsters (from dropping out)?" said Diaz, who does dropout prevention volunteer work with the Communities in Schools program
He said one of his goals as board member will be to return accountability to the district's financial practices.
"We really need to impose some kind of accountability on how we spend taxpayer money," he said.
Diaz said Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra should resign or be fired by the school board because of the financial controversy.
"I find it very difficult to believe he could ever be as effective as superintendent again," he said.
Diaz, 67, worked for the district for 36 years before retiring in 1994. He serves as the chairman of the Texas Youth Commission advisory board.
Other candidates for the three at-large seat are the Rev. Harry Williams, Isaac Valencia, Jonathan Valdez, Rosalinda Sosa Bonilla, Pinky Brauer, Bobby Canales, Dot Adkins, Ramiro "Gambi" Gamboa, Robert Hinojosa, William O. Childress, Veronica S. Gonzalez, Michelle Velasquez and Mark Lincecum.
