Carroll's Lindsay Brown (11) pushes off San Antonio MacArthur's Sarah McDougal in pursuit of a loose ball Friday in the Lady Tigers' playoff loss.
The Carroll girls soccer team rolled through District 28-5A, but it was no match for a more physical team from District 25-5A in the playoffs.
San Antonio MacArthur, which finished second in District 25-5A, coasted past Carroll 5-1 in the area playoffs Friday at Buccaneer Stadium. MacArthur will play San Antonio Clark in the region quarterfinals next week.
"We have a problem, because we're not used to this type of competition in our district," said Carroll coach Linda Torno, whose team won district with just one loss. "Coaches from 25-5A tell me they have these kind of battles every single game, so when they get into the playoffs, they're ready to go. Our district's getting better, but we're not there yet."
Battle-tested MacArthur dominated the action for most of the game and outmuscled the Tigers throughout.
"MacArthur was a lot more physical than we're used to," Torno said. "We tried to prepare the girls for this type of game, but they just hadn't experienced it, so it was tough for them to be ready."
MacArthur, which has just two seniors on its roster, appeared ready from the opening kick. The Brahmas got on the board quickly when freshman Farah Arian's shot rebounded off Carroll goalkeeper Anna Little and back to Arian, who deposited it in the lower left corner of the goal just five minutes into the game.
Arian scored again after a crossing pass from Kacee Surratt to give MacArthur a 2-0 lead at the 21:12 mark in the first half.
Carroll got its only goal from Andrea Barrera at the 17:45 mark in the first half that closed the gap to 2-1.
Playing with the wind, MacArthur had a 3-1 lead after the first half. The Brahmas played well with the wind, but they played even better against it in the second half.
"We played especially well in the second half even with the wind conditions," MacArthur coach Lisa Mazur said. "I think it just took us a little while to get used to the environment and everything."
