Two women arrested after cocaine found
Sheriff credits increase in officers on special team
Two McAllen women were arrested Tuesday by the Nueces County Sheriff's Department after a search of their vehicle uncovered 61 pounds of cocaine.
Sheriff Larry Olivarez said Tuesday's seizure and two recent marijuana seizures are the result of an increased number of officers assigned to drug interdiction.
During spring break, the interdiction team was increased from two to six officers, he said.
The two women, who have not been formally charged, were arrested at about 11 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 77 near County Road 28.
The women were driving a 1995 Dodge Intrepid, which was seized by the sheriff's department.
The women were in county jail Tuesday on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, which is a first-degree felony, Olivarez said.
The case will be presented to federal authorities for prosecution, Olivarez said.
The cocaine's street value is estimated at about $3 million, Olivarez said.
