Islanders sneak past Kansas, 3-2

Narrow nightcap victory earns doubleheader split

From staff and correspondent reports

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Chuck Hoskins scattered three hits over 41/3 innings and Chad Gilpin drove in two runs to lead the Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the University of Kansas in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Jayhawks blanked the Islanders, 8-0, in the opening game.
A&M-Corpus Christi, which was drilled by Kansas, 15-3 and 19-9, on Feb. 23 at Cabaniss Field, scored three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Gilpin's two-run single with the bases loaded highlighted the inning for the Islanders (12-12). Bryan Coleman provided A&M-Corpus Christi with the eventual winning run with a sacrifice fly to right, which scored Gilpin. Kansas native Ryan Spaeny went 2-3 in the win for the Islanders.
Hoskins, making his second start of the season, surrendered one earned run en route to registering his first victory of the season. Stephen Delgado tossed two scoreless innings before Jeremy Fuller notched the final two outs in the seventh to pick up his first save. Kansas had the tying run on third on the game's final out.
"This is an awesome feeling," said Islanders coach Hector Salinas. "The guys really got after it today. Kansas threw a pitcher who was clocked in the mid-90s and the scouts were there to see him pitch. We gave him some trouble."
Pete Smart threw six strong innings, giving up just six hits, and Ryan Klocksien and Brett Kappelmann each drove in two runs apiece in the Jayhawks' opening win.
Kansas (14-8) took advantage of three Islanders errors, scoring six unearned runs. The Jayhawks got on the board with three runs in the first inning and would later add three more in the fourth and two in the fifth.
A&M-Corpus Christi starter Shawn Morgan, who entered the game with a 11.12 ERA, scattered nine hits and two earned runs over five innings and fell to 1-5.
Gilpin and Rick Hernandez combined for four of A&M-Corpus Christi's eight hits, each going 2-for-3 in the opening game.
The Islanders host Dallas Baptist in a single game at 1 p.m. Friday at Cabaniss Field. A&M-Corpus Christi and Dallas Baptist will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
