Skazyk, 'Rays ice Stampede again, 6-4
Corpus Christi goaltender 7-1 against Central Texas
From staff and correspondent reports
BELTON - Eddy Skazyk did it again.
The Corpus Christi goalie stopped 46 of 50 Central Texas shots Tuesday night, as the IceRays defeated the Stampede, 6-4, at the Bell County Exposition Center.
Skazyk is 7-1 against the Western Professional Hockey League Central Division champions. Skazyk and the IceRays swept the home-and-home series against Central Texas, as Corpus Christi scored a 5-4 overtime victory against the Stampede at Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.
Corpus Christi rookie forward Tobin Praznik scored his 41st and 42nd goals of the year in Tuesday's victory, and Most Valuable Player candidate Geoff Bumstead recorded his league-leading 109th point with his 32nd goal, which he scored in the third period.
Bumstead is tied with Chris Robertson as the IceRays' single-season point leader. Kurt Wickenheiser also scored a goal, his 58th, which gave him 107 points.
Corpus Christi has won three straight games and improved to 32-23-8 (72 points). With a 7-3 record against the Stampede, the IceRays are the only WPHL team with a winning record against Central Texas (45-16-3, 93 points).
After the IceRays staked a 2-1 lead after one period, Central Texas responded with a pair of goals in the second period to take a brief 3-2 lead. Goals by Jamie Hearn and Brad Baber came at the 14:59 and 17:45 marks of the second period, respectively.
The second period would end in a 3-3 tie, however, thanks to an unassisted goal by Wickenheiser, his 58th, with 1:44 to play before the second intermission.
The Stampede jumped to a 1-0 lead early in the game, scoring on its first power play of the game when forward Craig Johnston took a pass from Newhook 2:16 into the first period.
Corpus Christi stormed back, scoring back-to-back goals 12 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead. Praznik recorded his 41st goal to tie the game, 1-1 at the 3:06 mark of the first period and Cory Johnson scored his fourth goal as an IceRays forward and 20th of the season 3:18 into the game to give Corpus Christi the one-goal advantage.
