Love Chrysler CEO to write self-help book

Marion Brem wants to show that courage is a decision

Brem
No matter what the speaking engagement or civic function, Marion Luna Brem gladly shares a bit of wisdom that she learned the hard way.
"Courage is a decision," said Brem, who survived cancer, divorce and financial difficulties to become one of Corpus Christi's leading businesswomen. "You don't find it under the sofa, you don't inherit it; it's something you decide on. You find it when you wake up in the morning, have a meeting with yourself in the mirror and say, 'Today, I'm going to be courageous.' "
Brem has taken another courageous step this week by signing a book deal with New York publishers Penguin Putnam Inc. Brem will write a self-empowerment book for women due for release late this year. It will be printed in four languages and be available in Braille and audio cassette.
   Idea born after speeches
For the president and chief executive officer of Corpus Christi's Love Chrysler and Love Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Alice, the book contract is the realization of a year-long dream, a project inspired by the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response she's received as a motivational speaker across the country.
"I got the idea about a year ago after I noticed how many people were coming up to me after having given a speech to ask if I had a book out," Brem said. "That's when the light went on. I knew then I wanted to share my message that courage is a decision and passion is contagious."
Under the working title of "Sell Yourself a Life You'll Love," Brem's book draws upon the lessons and strategies she's developed as an entrepreneur in the competitive field of sales. Whatever title ends up making it into print, Brem said, one thing isn't up for debate: She'll launch her book signing here.
   A winning attitude
Brem's story of personal and professional triumphs over adversity is featured in a two-page spread titled "Failure Was Not an Option" in this month's issue of For Women First. In the article, Brem shares intimate details of her most trying circumstances and how she came out of it a winner. She also gives readers five techniques for realizing personal goals.
On Thursday, Brem returns to that theme as a keynote speaker of the Spring 2000 Health Conference sponsored by the Latino Education Project, an affiliate of the National Hispanic Council on Aging. The conference, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center, features 40 exhibitors and provides information about various health topics, from diabetes to breast care.
