Berney Seal returns to the broadcasting business

The 'Mouth of South Texas' says his new show is an alternative to area's conservative talk radio

The self-proclaimed "Mouth of South Texas," Berney Seal, is returning to radio April 3. His new "Berney Seal Show" will be heard weekdays in the 7 to 9 a.m. slot on KCCT-AM/1150 as part of a makeover of the all-talk station.
KCCT-AM recently was acquired by Benbro Broadcasting in a leased management agreement (with an option to buy). Benbro, owned by Ben Benavides, is in the process of selling Tejano station KLHB-FM/98.3.
This will be Seal's third talk show in the last eight years. The 71-year-old Realtor previously sat behind the mike for "Breakfast with Berney" shows on stations KEYS-AM/1440 and KTKY-FM/106.1. Phil Dixon, the producer and call-screener who worked with Seal at KTKY, will now do those jobs for him at KCCT.
Dixon will also report local news on the station.
Seal said he signed on to do the new show because he saw a need for an alternative to the decidedly conservative focus of other local radio talk hours. Seal's opinions are unabashedly to the left of those offered by KEYS hosts Jim Lago and Eric Von Wade.
"Somebody needs to speak for those from the middle to the liberal side of the spectrum," Seal said. "And the other local talk shows don't cover a wide enough variety of topics. We liberals should have a voice out there, too."
Bob Pena, program director for KCCT, said Seal's established fan base makes him a good addition to the revamped station.
"He can be controversial but his sweet side shows up as well, which endears him to everybody. We feel Berney didn't get his just due because of the poor signal on KTKY," Pena said.
Besides Seal's new show, KCCT's new lineup will include the nationally syndicated sports-talk program hosted by Jim Rome (11 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays), a local sports talk show hosted by Pena in the afternoon drive-time slot and syndicated sex-talk show "Lovelines," hosted by Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew Pinsky, at midnight
