Only Elizalde remains alive in Golden Gloves
From staff and correspondent reports
FORT WORTH - After five losses in two nights, Corpus Christi has just one boxer left at the Golden Gloves State Tournament.
James Elizalde, the state runner-up heavyweight a year ago, defeated Lance Menn of Fort Worth by decision Friday at John Justin Arena. Elizalde will fight in the finals today.
Corpus Christi's Jesse Saldana, fighting in the 147-pound class, lost a close decision to Gabriel Jaramillo from San Antonio.
On Thursday, Corpus Christi boxers lost all four of their bouts.
Now, all of Corpus Christi's hopes rest on Elizalde's shoulders.
"He looked very good out there," coach Ralph Davila said. "He was hurting his opponent, and he needed to, because he was fighting a guy from Fort Worth - a hometown guy. He had to really impress the judges."
The state champions advance to the National Golden Gloves, April 30-May 6 in Detroit.
"I think (Elizalde)'s chances are good," Davila said. "This is his second time around, so he's very hungry for that title."
