Wanted: Girls to carry roses for Selena
Video segment to be used during multimedia musical
By Paige Ross Caller-Times
Three hundred little girls in pastel dresses are being sought to lay flowers at the base of the statue of Selena Quintanilla-Perez on the Corpus Christi bayfront Sunday.
The tribute to the late Tejano singer will be videotaped for use in "Selena Forever," a musical about the vocalist that is in rehearsal in San Antonio, before a national tour.
"We're trying to assemble at least 300 people for the video," said Jose Herrera, assistant to the director for the video project. "I need at least 300 little girls."
The video segment is about passing on the musical and cultural legacy of Selena's work and life to another generation, director Bill Virchis said.
"It's about the youth that will carry on her music," the director said. "That's why I wanted little children, because that is the future of all of us.
"It's about a cultural legacy, of being bigger-than-life, a role model," Virchis said. "It's an important accent to the play."
The video will be used in the musical, which features a cast of 35 singers, actors, dancers and musicians, with almost 30 songs in the show.
"It's going to be a multimedia show. It's nothing like you've ever seen," Herrera said, describing onstage video cameras being used during concert segments of the musical. "We'll have footage from Selena's life simultaneously projected on the stage while we're doing the show."
Herrera said Virchis requested that the children in the video dress in pastels, preferably "Sunday dresses" as opposed to jeans or dark colors, and be no taller than 4 feet 11 inches tall.
"We're trying to keep it uniform," Herrera said. "We don't want this to look like a concert. It's just a little tribute to her, coming down and putting white roses on the statue."
The producers are looking for girls age nine to 11, but said younger girls would not be turned away if they fit in visually with the rest of the children participating.
The segment will be filmed at the Selena Memorial at the entrance to Peoples Street T-Head on Shoreline Boulevard.
Those interested in participating should arrive at the Omni Hotel Bayfront lobby, 707 N. Shoreline Blvd., at 3:30 p.m. for registration, Herrera said. Look for signs to a first floor ballroom where people will gather before the filming.
The musical, scheduled to open March 21 at Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio, will play Selena Auditorium April 11 through 15.
