Inmate may have pushed his teacher
By Michael Hines Caller-Times
A Beeville prison inmate serving a 40-year sentence could face another felony charge after being accused of pushing his teacher to the ground Monday morning.
Prison officials said James Arthur Thomas, 39, was asked to leave the GED class Monday after Nickie Cambell, a 46-year-old instructor, discovered him masturbating during the class. A correctional officer took Thomas from the class, said Larry Todd, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
As a correctional officer began to write up the paperwork on the incident, Thomas returned to the class. When Cambell refused to readmit him, he pushed her to the ground, Todd said.
Cambell wasn't seriously injured and was expected to return to work today, Todd said.
Thomas was placed in a separate cell while the investigation continues, and Todd said the inmate could face administrative and criminal charges. Administratively, Thomas could be restricted to his cell for 23 hours a day and lose his visitation privileges.
Thomas could also face charges of assault on a public official. The third-degree felony carries a sentence of two to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Investigations are being conducted by the warden's staff and by internal affairs, but Todd said he wasn't certain how long it would be before charges were presented.
What sparked the outburst is still unknown, he said. Assaults in the unit, however, are not uncommon.
Windham School District has 20 staffers at the McConnell unit. Teachers undergo security training, showing them measures such as how to trigger alarms and recognize dangerous situations.
