Back in the game

News of revived Austin-Corpus Christi air service welcome.

Hot dog: Off we go into the . . . well, into regularly scheduled non-stop daily flights between Corpus Christi and Austin. It may not be the most rousing bit of news we've gotten recently, but it's still a plus.
Corpus Christi, as those here who regularly travel to the state capital know all too well, has been without such service since 1998. The latest carrier, Aspen Mountain Air, threw in its hand after operating here for only six months. Prior to that, Conquest Airlines Corp. served the two cities from 1988 to 1997, when the entire firm went bankrupt.
The lack of such a connection has been both irritating and economically damaging to this community. The fact that travelers between Corpus Christi and Austin currently must choose between driving or making time-consuming air connections in Houston has been a drag on the city, not to mention an embarrassment.
Now, an outfit that's been in business two years, Austin Express Airlines Inc., has announced its intention to get Corpus Christi back into the game. Beginning July 5, the line will offer four flights to Austin daily on 19-seat turbo-prop aircraft.
It's not the ritz, air transport-wise, and it's a little pricey - about $80 one-way - but the need is obvious. And who knows? If this thing flies, more and better could take wing.
