Islanders cross counrty, volleyball announce inaugural Schedules

From staff reports

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's volleyball and cross country programs, both of which begin competition this fall, announced their inaugural season schedules on Tuesday.
The volleyball schedule, which consists of as many as 32 matches, will begin September 1-2 at the Lamar Invitational in Beaumont and features matches with Oklahoma, New Mexico State, Texas Tech and George Mason.
"It's a really good schedule considering the time I had to complete it," Islander head coach Frances Kinnison said. "The team will be thrown to the wolves, so to speak, in the first three weekends. The freshmen will quickly find out what Division I volleyball is all about.
"We will see strong competition at the beginning and end of our schedule. "However, we should be very competitive in the middle portion of the schedule."
The home schedule, which will be played at the on-campus Moody Fieldhouse, will consist of eight dates and nine matches. The home opener is set for Tuesday, September 19 against North Texas.
Season tickets can be purchased through the athletic department's ticket office at 825-5694. Cost is $25 for the general public and $20 for faculty and staff.
Individual tickets can be purchased at the gate on match days for $4 (general admission) and $2 for senior citizens and students under the age of 17. A&M-Corpus Christi students will be admitted free of charge with a valid university Sand Dollar card.
The cross country schedule consists of seven firm dates, opening with the first-ever Islander Opening Splash, September 1 at Corpus Christi's West Guth Park. Several Texas schools are expected to participate in the meet, including regional powers Rice and Houston.
"The Splash will be hard to predict," said head coach Shawn Flanagan. "Since we will begin practice a week before the event, much of our success will be predicated on the team's preparation in the summer.
"It will be a competitive field with Rice, a national qualifier and Houston, which has been strong the past several years. Both schools have outstanding recruiting classes coming in. This should be a good reality check."
Among the other scheduled cross country meets include trips to Houston, College Station, San Marcos, San Antonio, as well as the NCAA District Championships in Denton.
"The schedule has been designed to help us improve as the season progresses," Flanagan said. "With a team consisting mainly of freshmen, we will have a variety of competition opportunities which will prepare us for the district championships."
