IceRays named WPHL franchise of the year
From staff and correspondent reports
The IceRays , who sold out every home game for the second consecutive season, have been honored as the Western Professional Hockey League's Franchise of the Year.
The announcement came at the end of this week's WPHL annual spring conference on Tuesday.
Also, league officials voted to realign divisions, moving from a three-division format to two divisions. Corpus Christi will now play in the Eastern Division along with Austin Ice Bats, Central Texas Stampede, Fort Worth Brahmas, Lake Charles Ice Pirates, Monroe Moccasins, Shreveport Mudbugs and Tupelo T-Rex.
Next year, the top four teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs, with each of the three playoff rounds going best-of-7-game formats.
The Brahmas were named the league's most improved franchise. The IceRays' Bill Davidson and Kevin Simpson were named corporate partnership sales executives of the year.
In the annual dispersal draft, the IceRays picked up defenseman Matt Osiecki from Alexandria, defenseman John Murphy from Arkansas and forward Jay Mazur from Alexandria.
