Rockport resident is rescued
From staff reports
Rockport resident Lonnie Mounts spent about an hour adrift late Thursday after the Sand Dollar, a 32-foot crewboat, sank in the Gulf of Mexico.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday the crew of a nearby jackup rig, the Araya, reported that the Sand Dollar began sinking. Three men, including Mounts, were on board. Both were about 22 miles southeast of Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, according to Coast Guard officials.
The crew of the Araya rescued two of the men, said Lt. Jeff Benoist, a rescue pilot with the U.S. Coast Guard. But Mounts, who was wearing a life jacket, began floating away. A Coast Guard rescue helicopter and a Coast Guard utility rescue ship, along with the USS Scout, a Navy mine ship in the area, began a search for Mounts.
Just 15 minutes after launching, the Coast Guard helicopter was on the scene and began searching for Mounts using infrared goggles, Benoist said. Half an hour into the search, the crew of the Araya reported that they had spotted Mounts and taken him aboard.
Mounts, a diabetic, was checked by Coast Guard medics aboard ship, who determined that he needed further medical attention.
Benoist said that Mounts had ingested seawater and needed insulin. He was airlifted from the ship to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial, where he was kept overnight for observation.
