Skazyk returns to guard IceRay's nets
Manitoba native re-signs with Corpus Christi for upcomming 200-2001 season
From staff and correspondent reports
With a large number of players already committed to returning this fall, the IceRays now have seen to it that a familiar face will be minding the nets at Memorial Coliseum.
Goaltender Eddy Skazyk, who led the team with 19 wins and a 3.86 goals-against average, has re-signed for the 2000-2001 season, the IceRays announced Friday.
The 25-year-old Skazyk will enter training camp in October as one of the team's top two goaltenders along with newcomer Jason Carey, a WPHL All-Star who was acquired via trade with Central Texas in May.
For Skazyk, the opportunity to make Corpus Christi his home was too appealing to pass up.
"I'm very pleased to be returning to the IceRays," he said. "The fans were very receptive to me last season, and because of that, I stayed her over the summer. I'm coming back next year and hopefully for many more seasons to come."
The native of Lockport, Manitoba, joined the IceRays prior to last season after a two-year stint with three different teams in the West Coast Hockey League. He wound up splitting time with Jason Genik all season, finishing with a 19-14-5 record and leading Corpus Christi to a first-round playoff victory over El Paso with a 3-0 shutout in Game 5 of the best-of-five series.
"Eddy is a solid goaltender, and it's great to have him here another season," head coach Taylor Hall said. "He led us into the playoffs and helped us defeat El Paso. It's good to have that kind of experience between the pipes."
The IceRays also announced the signing of rookie defenseman Byron Pool Friday.
Pool, who just turned 25 on July 5, played four seasons at Colgate University, helping lead the Red Raiders to a second-place ECAC finish and an NCAA tournament berth.
"Byron is a big defenseman who likes to hit," Hall said. "I'm looking for good things from Byron; he will fit right in with our defensive philosophy."
