Houston voters will reportedly get to vote again on new arena
Harris County-Houston Sports Authority and NBA club agree on proposal for voters on new downtown arena
Associated Press
HOUSTON - Houston may not lose its professional basketball and hockey teams, after all.
The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority and the Houston Rockets have reached an agreement on a downtown sporting arena, both the Houston Chronicle and KRIV-TV reported. The Rockets, Houston Comets and Arena football Houston Thunderbears have threatened to relocate if a new facility is not built.
"Everything's been settled for a couple of weeks with the one exception: making the sports authority and the Rockets comfortable with the architect selection and we've now got a consensus on teaming that I think is going to work for both sides," Houston Rockets chief operating officer George Postolos said.
The agreement must still be approved by the sports authority board, City Council and lastly by voters in a November referendum. Last fall, 55 percent of voters turned down a $160 million arena bond proposal.
The project has been estimated to cost $175 million, with Rockets owner Les Alexander expected to make lease payments of $8.5 million a year.
HSA chairman Bill Burge said he was not aware of agreement, "but if that's the case, subject to seeing all of the details, I'm excited."
