Inaugural-year IceRay returns to fold as Corpus Christi trades for Boucher
'Scrappy' forward piled up 115 minutes during his last season here
From staff reports
Tyler Boucher is back, and the Corpus Christi IceRays hope he will be better behaved this time.
The IceRays acquired the forward from the New Mexico Scorpions in exchange for defenseman Darryl Olsen on Friday.
Boucher is an original IceRay, playing in the team's first season in 1998-99. However, he is best known for an ugly incident in his last game as an IceRay when he used the butt end of his stick to jab a Lake Charles player above the eye in a playoff series. Corpus Christi went on to lose the series, and Boucher received a 15-game suspension from the league. The IceRays traded Boucher to New Mexico after the incident.
Boucher scored nine goals and had nine assists in his lone season in Corpus Christi, but it was his physical play that made him a fan favorite. Despite being one of the smaller players in the Western Professional Hockey League at 5-foot-6, 165 pounds, Boucher piled up 115 penalty minutes - seventh most in the league - while with the IceRays.
"Tyler is a scrappy player, who isn't afraid to hit anyone," IceRays coach Taylor Hall said. "His physical nature of play is exactly what I look for in a player."
Boucher scored 11 points and logged 82 penalty minutes in 30 games with New Mexico last season. Boucher and New Mexico eliminated Corpus Christi in the second round of the playoffs last season and advanced to the WPHL finals.
