Road games remain unforgiving for 'Rays

Corpus Christi drops fifth consecutive game away from home in 5-2 loss to New Mexico

From staff and correspondent reports

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Five thousand feet above sea level, the Corpus Christi IceRays lost their fifth straight game away from home.
Former IceRays forward Tyler Boucher scored the game-winning goal for New Mexico in a 5-2 Scorpions victory at Tingley Coliseum Friday night.
A toe injury to Kevin Holliday and a death in the family of Trevor Janicki trimmed IceRays coach Taylor Hall's defense corps down to four players. In addition to the defensive shortage, injuries to Dave Gilmore and Mike Tomlinson and suspension of Chris Robertson forced Hall to go with just nine forwards. The depleted roster and the change in altitude from South Texas to Albuquerque that tires athletes who normally compete closer to sea level because of the lack of oxygen at higher levels was all the advantage the Scorpions would need. Corpus Christi fell to 15-13-6 (36 points)
and failed to gain ground in the Western Professional Hockey League's Central Division. Austin lost its seventh straight game while Fort Worth defeated Monroe, 6-4, to draw even with the Ice Bats for second place in the Central Division with 38 points. Division-leading Central Texas also won Friday; the Stampede is 28-9-1 (57 points).
After a scoreless first period, the IceRays took a 2-1 lead against New Mexico (24-10-2, 50 points) after goals by Kurt Wickenheiser and Geoff Bumstead. For Wickenheiser, it was his 28th of the year. He assisted on Bumstead's goal to drive Wickenheiser's point total to 52.
   Bumstead's goal, his 19th, preserved a 17-game point streak.
New Mexico's Randy Murphy tied the game, 2-2, 8:12 into the second period. Boucher then netted the game-winner against goalie Eddy Skazyk (10-6-3).
Scorpions forward Darcy Pengelley added two empty-net goals in the final 1:20 of play.
The IceRays dropped to 4-7-4 away from Memorial Coliseum heading into a 7:05 game at El Paso today. Corpus Christi will also play at Central Texas before returning home for a Jan. 15 against Austin.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH: On Friday, IceRays forward Kurt Wickenheiser was named the WPHL player of the month for December.
Wickenheiser recorded 12 goals and 14 assists in 11 games during December, yet he was left off the Team Texas All Star Game roster. The 14-year veteran entered Friday's game tied for second in the league with 27 goals and he was he is ninth in overall scoring with 50 points. He added a goal and an assist against New Mexico.
