Javs women look forward to long stay in playoffs

By Matt Young
Caller-Times

KINGSVILLE - In the past, simply qualifying for the conference tournament would have been enough to satisfy the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team. Now, that's not even close to being enough.
The Javelinas embark on what they hope will be a long postseason journey when they play Northeastern Oklahoma in the first round of the Lone Star Conference playoffs today at 7 p.m. at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
A&M-Kingsville is the top seed from the LSC South Division after finishing 20-6 overall and 15-1 in conference. Northeastern Oklahoma, which finished 15-11, 8-6, is the North Division's fourth seed.
As the tournament's top seed, the Javelinas can bring the rest of the tournament to Kingsville with a win today. The tournament's first round games are played at the higher-seeded team's home court. The semifinal and final games will be played at the top-seeded team's home court. The semifinal and final games will be played Friday and Saturday.
"Some may say we're a favorite because of our record, but any time you get into tournament play, you never know what can happen," said A&M-Kingsville coach Jill Willson. "It's anybody's ball game this time of year. We hope our getting to play at home will help us a lot, and as long as we take care of business, we'll get that home-court advantage."
The A&M-Kingsville men's team also opens the postseason today, against Northeastern Oklahoma. The Javelinas, who are the South Division's fourth seed, play their first-round game at 7 p.m. at Northeastern Oklahoma, which is the top seed from the North Division.
Earlier this season, Northeastern Oklahoma (22-4) beat A&M-Kingsville (15-11) by 10 points.
The winner of the conference tournament automatically qualifies for the NCAA Division II South Central Region tournament March 9-11. Although the tournament will take two at-large bids, the A&M-Kingsville men's team would have to win the conference tournament to advance.
On the other hand, the A&M-Kingsville women, which are ranked third in the region, would have a shot at drawing an at-large bid with a decent showing in the conference tournament.
"That's not something we're thinking about; we want to win this tournament and get the automatic bid," Willson said. "If we lose (today), there's pretty much no way we'd get in, so we don't want to look ahead. This is the postseason, so we have to focus on the first game, which is (today)."
