Selena widower’s band gets award for ‘Resurrection’

From staff and wire reports

The Chris Perez Band, formed by guitarist Chris Perez in Corpus Christi in 1997, won a Grammy award Wednesday in the Latin Rock/Alternative Performance category for its album "Resurrection."
The Chris Perez Band built a sound that distinctly reflects South Texas culture, part rock and part Latin, forged in Tejano, reflecting influences as far flung as psychedelic British pop, classic blues and jazz, and flamenco traditions.
After a spate of songwriting during an introspective period after the death of his wife, Tejano star Selena Quintanilla-Perez, Perez formed his band with vocalist John Garza. Fellow former Los Dinos keyboardist Joe Ojeda joined them and the trio became the core of the new band, swapping song ideas and writing new material together. Bass guitarist Adriel Ramirez and drummer Alex Tamez completed the group, which voted to name themselves after Perez despite his objections.
Carlos Santana, who first gained fame a generation ago with a searing guitar performance at Woodstock, won seven Grammys for his comeback album "Supernatural."
Even when he wasn't on stage, Santana was on the minds of his fellow performers.
"I think I was conceived to his music. He's an influence to me as a guitar player," said Perez.
Also winning a Grammy was the Uvalde-based Los Palominos in the Tejano Performance category for its album "Por Eso Te Amo." Los Palominos were selected over local nominees Jennifer y Los Jetz and A.B. Quintanilla y Los Kumbia Kings. Other groups nominated for Tejano Performance were Intocable and Jaime y Los Chamacos.
Each of Santana's victories came for a track from "Supernatural.
