Jammin' with Jerry Jeff Walker on Friday will help more than 800 diabetic children helped by Driscoll Children's Hospital.
The hospital hopes to raise $150,000 for its diabetes center with Fiesta de Los Ninos 2000.
The festival will be held Friday at the Bayfront Convention Center and features Jerry Jeff Walker and live and silent auctions.
All of the money raised at the event will benefit the hospital, the only one of its type in the Coastal Bend that specializes in caring for children, and its diabetes center.
"The funds that we raise go toward children and the equipment that is absolutely needed here at Driscoll Children's Hospital," said Cissy Castaneda, a development coordinator for the hospital.
What's unique about the hospital's diabetes center is that it is both an outreach and a local care center, said Dr. Stephen Ponder, a pediatric endocrinologist.
"We'll have a nutrition lab for parents and children to get hands-on experience preparing meals," Ponder said. "In our exam rooms, we'll have computers for interactive education."
The computers in the exam rooms, which will have touch screens, will help teach parents and children about different types of diabetes and how to do meal plans, among other things.
"A lot of what we do in endocrinology is teaching people how to take care of themselves," Ponder said. "We're trying to raise $500,000, ultimately, for the center."
The hospital's development foundation hosts four fund-raising programs each year, Castaneda said.
Koch Petroleum Group is underwriting the event for the eighth time. When the fiesta began eight years ago, the company agreed to support the hospital by contributing $30,000 each year for five years.
Koch then agreed to sign on for another three, said Rich Tuttle, regional public affairs director.
"There's a real need for health care services in South Texas for children," Tuttle said. "We give $30,000 a year which pays for the rental space, food and entertainment, and that way everything that comes in can be netted back to the hospital."
In the past eight years the event has raised $1.8 million, Tuttle said.
