Photographer Ray Madrigal, one of the founders of the Corpus Christi Coffee Club, has announced he will seek the Democratic nomination to the Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, Place 1.
Madrigal said his longtime community activism and his understanding of the job make him the most qualified candidate for the position.
"I believe I can be fair and impartial in making decisions that affect people's lives," Madrigal said. "I've been a businessman in the community for over 35 years and I've lived in this community my whole life."
Madrigal said he would use his courtroom to address truancy problems and to try to improve high school dropout rates.
"These kids are in trouble for truancy and the next thing you know they are dropping out of schools," Madrigal said. "We've always tried to address this problem and it seems like we're not getting anywhere."
Madrigal, who owns Ray's Photo on Morgan Avenue, participated in Leadership Corpus Christi and graduated as a legal assistant from Del Mar College, which he said has given him insight into how to settle disputes and deal with legal cases.
"I think that gives me an edge in understanding how the system works," Madrigal said. "There are some tough decisions you have to make there."
Madrigal started the Corpus Christi Coffee Club, a weekly political and community affairs program, with about a dozen others in 1991. The Coffee Club brings political candidates and issues to the public through a radio and television program.
He also made a bid for Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, Place 1 in 1996. Madrigal has been a member of the League of United Latin American Citizens since 1967.
Ronnie Trammell, Joe A. Gonzalez, Toni Chavarria Carillo, Rose Diane Cantu and Joe Ortiz also are vying for the Democratic nomination.
