A&M-Kingsville women drop Commerce in 101-57 win

KINGSVILLE - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women opened defense of their Lone Star Conference championship with a 101-57 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon in the Steinke Center.
   The Lions were also opening their LSC South Division slate.
   Forward Pat Lewandowski had the big game for the Javelinas, scoring 28 points and hitting 12 of 16 field-goal attempts. She also had nine steals and was two of four from the three-point striple. She was two of two at the free-throw line and had five rebounds.
   Precious Thibodeaux had 20 points and led the rebounding with eight. Alex Gonzalez was the only other player in doubles, scoring 11.
   Jessica Douglas led the Lions with 16 points.
   TAMUC had a three-point lead at 12-9 with 15:26 on the clock before a 13-0 streak by the Javelinas sent them ahead, 21-12. It wasn't close again.
   The Javelinas had a 59-36 halftime lead.
   The 101 points tied the school record, set against Texas Lutheran in 1982-83 and equalled against Concordia Lutheran in 1987-88.
   The Javelinas had 20 steals and forced 30 turnovers. They had five blocked shots, and freshman Wilson had three of these.
   The Javelinas, ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II, went to 11-2 for the year while Commerce fell to 2-7.
   The game opened a three-game home stand for the Javelinas. They will host Cameron Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Southwestern Oklahoma Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lone Star Conference crossover games.
   The Javelinas will face Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce Jan. 9.
