Panthers take home consolation win, 87-80
By Mark Zuckerman Caller-Times
Birmingham-Southern College may not yet have a full-fledged NCAA basketball program, but the Panthers can now say they've beaten a two-time NCAA Tournament participant.
Behind another big night from forward Joe Ransom and outstanding outside shooting, Birmingham-Southern took down Winthrop, 87-80, Friday night in the consolation game of the Koch Petroleum Islander Invitational at Memorial Coliseum.
The Panthers (6-6), who are in the process of moving up from NAIA to NCAA Division I, were deadly from behind the arc, draining 13 of 22 3-point attempts. In the process, they took out an Eagle team that has won back-to-back Big South titles, the same conference Birmingham-Southern will join once it attains full Division I status.
"It's a nice win for us," said head coach Duane Reboul, whose team beat Texas A&M by 20 in College Station earlier this year. "I'm proud of our players. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a good rivalry."
Winthrop (5-8) had jumped out to a commanding 27-13 lead in the first half, but the Panthers rattled off a 13-1 run to get back in the game. Their 12th 3-pointer of the night - out of the hands of guard T.R. Reed (19 points) - knotted the score at 68 with 7:45 left.
A pair of Reed free throws gave Birmingham-Southern a 76-74 lead, then Ransom sealed the deal by hitting both of his free throws - his 31st and 32nd points of the game. The 6-foot-6 senior, who had 28 points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday, pulled down 10 rebounds against the Eagles and hit 4 3-pointers.
"He's an excellent player," Reboul said. "He can shoot from the outside and score from inside. It's too bad we just can't put him at every position."
