Hicks moves to top of Division I

Islanders’ forward puts up 40 points, moves to No. 1 in scoring

Caller-Times File
Islanders forward Michael Hicks scored 40 points against Portland State on Saturday, raising his season average to 25.5 points per game.
The nation's leading Division I basketball scorer plays at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi ... sort of.
Islanders senior forward Michael Hicks, who had his second 40-point game of the season Saturday afternoon against Portland State, is now averaging 25.5 points per game, more than any other player in Division I.
There's a catch, though. Because A&M-Corpus Christi is in the third year of a four-year provisional period, the NCAA does not yet recognize statistics from the school.
Hicks, a 6-foot-5 senior from Panama, was surprised to hear of his feat.
"I don't pay attention to that stuff," he said. "I'm glad that I lead the nation in scoring, but like I said, I didn't know."
Hicks went into Saturday's contest averaging an even 24 points per game (fourth in the country), then poured in 40 to help lead the Islanders to a 99-95 overtime win over the Vikings.
In the process, he jumped past Brandon Wolfram of Texas-El Paso, Isaac Spencer of Murray State and Henry Domercant of Eastern Illinois for No. 1 on the scoring list.
Hicks returns to the court Thursday when A&M-Corpus Christi hosts Birmingham-Southern in the first round of the Koch Petroleum Islander Invitational. The Islanders will face either Winthrop or Cleveland State in Friday's final round.
