Baseball, softball schedules released
A&M-CC men to face Texas twice; women will battle ’00 champs Oklahoma
From staff and correspondent reports
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team will face in-state power Texas twice on the road, while the Islander softball team will face defending national champion Oklahoma this spring, the school announced Friday with the release of the 2001 schedules.
The baseball team, 23-29 in its inaugural season, will take on the Longhorns, who were ranked 10th in the country and played in the College World Series last year, in Austin on February 13 and March 27.
A&M-Corpus Christi will face two other teams that advanced to the regionals of the NCAA tournament last year. Southwest Texas State, which went 34-29 and captured the Southland Conference tournament title, will host A&M-Corpus Christi on April 3 and 25 in San Marcos. Texas Tech, 36-26 a year ago, will host the Islanders for a two-game set May 1-2 in Lubbock.
Among other notable opponents, A&M-Corpus Christi will play home-and-home series with Texas-Pan American, Lamar and New Mexico State, while facing Arizona on the road for a three-game series in mid-April.
The Islanders will kick off the 2001 season by hosting Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader February 3 at Cabaniss Field.
"We have the makings of a pretty rough schedule for a second-year program," Islanders baseball coach Hector Salinas said. "However I feel really good that we made significant improvements over last year. With that in mind, we have upped the strength of our schedule at bit."
The A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will face eight nationally ranked opponents, including the defending national champion Sooners.
The Islanders, who are coming off a 20-35-1 inaugural season, will get a shot at Oklahoma March 11 in the Sooners' tournament in Norman, Okla. A&M-Corpus Christi also will play 6th-ranked Alabama, 10th-ranked Fresno State, 12th-ranked Oregon State, 16th-ranked Oregon, 18th-ranked Stanford, 21st-ranked Mississippi State and 22nd-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette.
Other opponents for the Islanders include Penn State, Texas, Texas A&M and North Carolina.
"What a great schedule," softball coach Natasha Dumoski said. "I'm really looking forward to this season and the opportunity to play several great teams. I really believe in order to become one of the best teams, you have to play against the best. For our relatively young team, this challenging schedule has us on that path."
The 28-game home slate at the Cabaniss Softball Complex includes three tournaments. A&M-Corpus Christi will open the home schedule by hosting the Islander Classic Feb. 9-11 against Mississippi State, Oregon State, Southwest Texas State and Tennessee.
Season tickets for both the baseball and softball teams, which will be on sale beginning January 15, 2001, can be purchased through the A&M-Corpus Christi athletic ticket office at 825-5694.
