Mismatch helped some

Islanders Seldom-used players took part in blowout win

By Matt Young
Caller-Times

How big of a blowout was Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 79-52 win over Jacksonville on Wednesday at Memorial Coliseum?
It was such a mismatch that the Islanders second- and third-leading scorers were seldom-used players Roberta Plaza and Stephanie Gutierrez. Plaza and Gutierrez, who both entered the game with two points apiece for the entire season, finished with career-highs nine and eight points, respectively.
"The No. 1 thing about this game was we were all having so much fun," said the 6-foot-4 Plaza, who had played in just two games going into Wednesday. "I can't believe I was the second-leading scorer. It's exciting."
Plaza's nine points came in just nine minutes of action.
Gutierrez also took advantage of her limited playing time. Gutierrez entered the game with 16:02. Not even a minute later, Gutierrez had her career-high with four points. The sophomore from San Antonio scored on a fast-break layup and a 10-foot pull-up jumper on consecutive possessions. Gutierrez added a couple late free throws and another jumper to finish with eight points.
Starting point guard Mandie Vinck was the only Islander not to score. Vinck took just one shot in the game.

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS: The Islanders will get a few days off to go back home for the holidays before going on a road trip to play Air Force on Dec. 28.
"I'm just glad we get to go home with a win," Detra Johnson said. "This was a big Christmas present for us, so Merry Christmas to us, I guess."

  • AIR WALKER: In women's basketball, when a ball gets stuck on the rim, the officials usually have to get something to reach the rim and dislodge the ball because none of the players can jump high enough to knock the ball loose.
That's not the case when Jacksonville's Angela Walker is on the floor. After an Islander shot got lodged between the backboard and the rim, Walker didn't need any help getting the ball loose. She just jumped and knocked it down.
The 5-foot-11 Walker's impressive leaping ability drew a round of applause from the Islander bench.
