A&M-CC women fall to Weber

Wildcats’ free throws hurt Isles in 56-50 loss

By Matt Young
Caller-Times

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Weber State both looked lost shooting from the floor, but Weber State knew exactly what to do when it got to the free-throw line.
Weber State made 10 straight free throws in the final two minutes to sneak past A&M-Corpus Christi 56-50 Monday at Memorial Coliseum.
The win was Weber State's first over a Division I opponent this season. It was A&M-Corpus Christi's fourth loss in its last five games.
The two teams combined to shoot 34 percent from the field, but Weber State couldn't miss from the free-throw line.
"Coaches say you win games at the free-throw line, and we proved that tonight," said Weber State coach Carla Taylor, whose team made 17 of 19 free throws. "To go 100 percent from the line in the last few minutes of the game is outstanding. That's the way you win games down the stretch."
Stephanie Stanger, who scored a team-high 16 points, epitomized the game for Weber State. The Weber State guard shot just 3 for 17 from the floor, but she was a perfect 8 for 8 from the free-throw line. Weber State's 6-foot-4 center Crystal Howe also played a huge role scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
Detra Johnson led A&M-Corpus Christi (5-6) with 17 points.
With the game tied at 46 and two minutes left, Weber State went on a scoring binge at the charity stripe. Stanger hit two free throws to put Weber State up by two. After a Johnson bucket tied the game again, Meghan Geddes hit two more free throws to give Weber State the lead.
The Islanders had a chance to tie the game on the next possession, but Johnson fumbled away an entry pass to the post and was forced to send Stanger to the line again. Stanger hit both to put give Weber State the 52-48 lead with 42 seconds remaining.
Johnson hit another shot from the floor to cut the lead to two, but with time running out the Islanders were forced to foul, which was a bad idea against Weber State, which hit four more free throws to provide the final margin.
"They hit their free throws down the stretch, so you have to give them credit, but we have to learn to execute better down the stretch," A&M-Corpus Christi coach Sheryl Estes said.
While Weber State was hitting free throws, A&M-Corpus Christi never could find the mark from the field. The 34 percent shooting night added up to another frustrating night for the Islanders.
"It's so frustrating, because we don't know what we're doing wrong," said Islander point guard Mandie Vinck, who scored a season-high 10 points. "We practice so hard, and we're getting good shots, but they're not going down. We know the potential of this team, and to struggle like this just drives you crazy."
