Goalie Jason Carey (right) was traded by the IceRays on Monday to Fort Worth for wing Layne Roland. In a separate deal, Corpus Christi traded defenseman Gatis Tseplis for defenseman Dave Wilejto.
When the Corpus Christi IceRays acquired goaltender Jason Carey in the offseason, they talked about how valuable he would be to the team. On Monday, they found out exactly how much value he has when they traded him.
The IceRays got right wing Layne Roland from the Fort Worth Brahmas for Carey. In a separate trade, the IceRays traded defenseman Gatis Tseplis for defenseman Dave Wilejto.
Carey, who was an all-star goaltender with Central Texas last season, hadn't lived up to his all-star billing with the IceRays. Through 20 games, Carey ranked 15th in the league with a 3.27 goals-against average.
Roland played for the IceRays last season, tallying 20 points in 19 games. In the offseason, Roland signed to play in Germany, which caused the IceRays to trade his rights to Fort Worth. When Roland decided to come back to the WPHL, the IceRays were quick to bring him back into the fold.
"Layne is a big-time scorer, and we are happy he's back in here," IceRays coach Taylor Hall said. "Since the beginning of the season our focus has been on defense, and while we know defense is important, we needed to upgrade our offense, and Layne gives us that offensive presence that we have been missing."
The trade of Wilejto for Tseplis should upgrade the IceRays defense. At 6-foot-4, Wilejto will be the IceRays' biggest defenseman.
"Dave is a solid defenseman, and should complement an already stellar group of d-men," Hall said. "Dave's size and physical style of play should be a perfect fit to our small ice surface of Memorial Coliseum."
