Loyola no match for Spartans
No. 2 Michigan St. hands Ramblers a 103-71 loss
Associated Press
CHICAGO - At home or on the road, the result is the same for No. 2 Michigan State.
Charlie Bell had 19 and seven assists, and Jason Richardson added 17 points Saturday as the Spartans routed Loyola, 103-71, in their first road game of the year.
Andre Hutson and Zach Randolph added 16 points apiece, and Marcus Taylor had 15 for the Spartans (7-0), who extended the nation's longest winning streak to 18 games.
David Bailey scored 25 points and Corey Minnifield added 16 for Loyola (2-5), which had its first sellout crowd since the Gentile Center opened in 1996. The loss was Loyola's first to a non-conference opponent at home since Dec. 23, 1998, when the Ramblers lost to Western Michigan.
Unlike last year, when the Spartans took early-season trips to Puerto Rico, North Carolina and Arizona, they stayed home for their first six games this year. And after beating No. 8 Florida on Wednesday in a rematch of last year's national championship game, playing the Ramblers was a good way to ease onto the road.
The Spartans proved simply too strong, too deep and too good for Larry farmer's team. They shot 70 percent in the first half, and 65 percent for the game. They held Loyola to 37 percent shooting in the first half, and 47 percent for the game.
They outrebounded Loyola 41-24, and had 32 assists to the Ramblers' 15.
And when the Ramblers had opportunities, they couldn't take advantage. They were just 8-of-18 (45 percent) from the free throw line.
