Two unrelated arson fires break out at buildings on Morgan and Laredo
Two suspected arson fires broke out within a half-hour of each other Saturday morning at separate abandoned buildings.
The fire department received a call at 7:25 a.m. for a fire at 3931 Morgan.
A second call was received at 7:55 for 2110 Laredo. There were no injuries in either fire.
Though arson investigators are looking into both fires, the fire department does not suspect they are related.
"We wondered about it, but there is no connection," Capt. Lee Rogers said. "It appears coincidental."
The first fire, on Morgan, began in the southeast corner of the one-story, stucco and wood-frame building.
The fire gutted the interior but the roof and walls are intact, Rogers said.
He estimated damages at $10,000 for the defunct nightclub.
The second fire, near Agnes and 18th Street, destroyed the one-story, stucco and wood frame building.
Damages to the former auto shop are estimated at $5,000.
"It was a total burn," Rogers said.
"There was heavy black smoke going straight up in the air."
