Police officer catches woman who jumped from overpass
Ohio policeman who held back traffic said he thought it was his job to break her fall when she dove toward street
Scripps Howard News Service
CINCINNATI - A police officer prevented a suicide this week by catching a woman who tried to kill herself by diving off an overpass.
Officers found the woman, 23, perched on top of the overpass about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 23, threatening to jump.
As they tried to talk her down, she dove headfirst off the overpass. Officer Lanny Ash, standing on a street 16 to 20 feet below, caught the 140-pound woman in his arms and broke her fall.
"He was down there holding back traffic, because from the way she was acting, we figured it was just a matter of time before she jumped," Sgt. Steve Ebbing said.
"When she did jump, he said he thought it was his job to catch her."
The woman, who earlier had been reported as missing, broke her left elbow in the fall.
Ash suffered muscle damage to both arms and was treated at a local hospital and released.
Ebbing said Ash may have saved the woman's life.
"She went over head first," he said.
"If she had landed that way, she probably would have snapped her neck."
