Wingfield signs with English, leaves IceRays
Corpus Christi forward to join the Bracknell Bees
From staff and correspondent reports
Former Corpus Christi IceRays' forward Brad Wingfield signed with the Bracknell Bees in England. The trip overseas is a promotion for the forward who spent two seasons with the IceRays.
"The (Western Professional Hockey League) is a developmental league, and our goal is to help players like Brad make it to a higher level," IceRays coach Taylor Hall said. "We are happy for Brad and wish him the best in England."
Wingfield scored 58 points in his two seasons in Corpus Christi, but he was best known for his bruising style of play that led to a team-high 492 penalty minutes in two seasons.
Bilaye-Benibo sets track record
Calallen High School's Biobele Bilaye-Benibo overcame an ankle injury to set a national record in the 200-meter low hurdles in the youth boy's division at the AAU National Junior Olympics last Wednesday in Orlando, Fla.
Benibo took the gold medal with a time of 24.89 seconds, just better than the 24.93 run by Anthony Francis Jr. of Giddings in 1997. Round Rock's Jeremy Jackson finished second in 25.04 and Katy's Tyler Whitham third in 25.15.
Benibo injured his right ankle during last Monday's long jump competition, and ran in his heat in the 200 hurdles just 30 minutes after completing the long jump.
"Tuesday I felt the same so we called the doctor back here," Benibo said. "He just said to take some aspirin. Coming in I had a good feeling about winning but wasn't sure about breaking the record. I was worried if I would do well and felt like just coming home. At the end of the race I looked at the clock and saw I had the record because I had the old one memorized."
Benibo earned a bronze medal in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 13.89. Whitham took first in 13.83 and Glen Woods of San Diego, Calif., third in 14.07. He also finished sixth in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump.
