'Rays sign 6-foot-7 forward
From staff and correspondent reports
IceRays fans won't have any trouble spotting the team's newest player this fall: he'll be the tallest one on the ice.
Dallas Anderson, a 6-foot-7 rookie forward, has signed with Corpus Christi, the team announced Wednesday. The IceRays also signed rookie defenseman Jason Lumsden.
Anderson, who played junior hockey in the Manitoba Junior League, will join former Austin and Abilene player Mike Vargahug, as the only 6-foot-7 players in WPHL history. The 20-year-old Manitoba native had 26 goals, 23 assists and 365 penalty minutes in 57 games last season for Swan Valley.
"Anderson is a strong winger," IceRays coach Taylor Hall said. "Dallas is going to add a dimension of size and strength we haven't had here in Corpus Christi."
Lumsden, 22, played four years at Norwich University, totaling 70 points and 132 penalty minutes in 101 career games, helping lead the Cadets to the NCAA Division III national championship last season.
"Jason is an offensive defenseman," Hall said. "Lumsden will help us on both our power play as well as our penalty killing situations."
Rays plan clinics, tourney
to encourage inline hockey
The IceRays will conduct free two-hour inline hockey clinics over the next two months, offering Corpus Christi youths the opportunity to learn the basics of the game.
The first session takes place Saturday at SOL Communications, 5325 Saratoga Blvd., with future clinics scheduled to be held at Vista Toyota, KIII-Channel 3, Northwest Regional Hospital and the Bayfront Convention Center. All events will take place inside the IceRays' new COOLAir Arena, a portable skating rink recently purchased by the team.
"The 'Roller Rays Summer Street Tour' will provide an excellent opportunity for the IceRays to give back to the youth of Corpus Christi while assisting in the growth of hockey in South Texas," vice president of sales and marketing Kevin Simpson said.
All clinics are free and open to kids ages 6-16. Participants must bring their own skates, helmets and sticks.
The IceRays also will host a street hockey tournament August 26 at Memorial Coliseum. Interested participants may sign up in the Special Olympics office at Sunrise Mall.
