District attorney turns over report on Moff to Rangers
Appraisal district questions over $42,000 spent but makes no accusations against ex-appraiser
By Guy H. Lawrence Caller-Times
District Attorney Carlos Valdez sent the Nueces County Appraisal District's report on spending by former chief appraiser George Moff to the Texas Rangers for investigation Tuesday.
Valdez met with Texas Ranger Robert Garza and provided him the report, which was released by the appraisal district board of directors last week. Garza could not be contacted late Tuesday. Valdez said he has no time frame for the Texas Rangers to complete their investigation.
In the report, the appraisal district board did not accuse Moff of wrongdoing, but questioned spending of $29,791 in merchandise, including an RCA digital satellite, a super capacity washing machine and a $1,200 vacuum cleaner. Also, receipts are missing for $12,867 in MasterCard purchases at places such as an antique mall, Ritz Camera and a Best Western motel, according to the report.
Moff, who served as chief appraiser for 19 years until he retired at the end of last year, said the charges and purchases can be explained, but that he was not asked to attend last week's board meeting to do so.
An appraisal district report and supporting documents obtained by the Caller-Times show that district money was used to buy items at places such as Best Buy and Sam's Club. Following a meeting on Thursday, appraisal district officials gave the spending report to District Attorney Carlos Valdez.
