Freer's Cash throws for third in shot put at Texas Relays
By Javier Becerra Caller-Times
AUSTIN - Kasey Cash admits she was a little intimidated by her opponents in the Section B girls shot competition in the 73rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Friday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
But by the end of the event, the Freer High School senior had come away with several new friends and a surprising third-place finish with a throw of 39 feet, 9Ý inches.
"I wasn't expecting to do this good today," said Cash, who stayed several minutes after the finals to exchange phone numbers and signatures. "There was a lot of hard competition out there and I was just trying to do my best."
Sharpstown's Nicole Brathwaite captured first with a throw of 41-3 . Tiffany Bunton of Fort Worth Arlington Heights finished second with a put of 41-1\ .
Cash's throw was just short of her personal best this season, an effort of 40- which ranked her third among the area's leaders entering the weekend.
Despite her bronze medal performance, Cash said she was battling jitters throughout the competition.
"I've been working hard and have been consistent all season," she said. "When I saw their distances I got scared. I was real nervous. But then I started talking to some of the girls and got more relaxed. I'm more nervous when I don't know who I'm competing against."
Cash is set to compete today in the discus at 10 a.m. She holds the area's best mark with a throw of 139-3, an improvement of more than 16 feet from her performance of a year ago at the Texas Relays. Cash finished 14th in 1999 with a throw of 122-10.
