Students reach bee tiebreaker

Final round of geography competition eludes 3 local sudents

Ankit Shah never listened to the radio in Virginia.
That's why the 14-year-old Baker Middle School student didn't know the location of the Delmarva Peninsula.
The missed question knocked him out of the tiebreaking round in the National Geographic Bee on Friday at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
"I never saw the Delmarva Peninsula on any map,'' Ankit said. "But I hear they use the term on the radio a lot in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Right after the question, I realized it was an abbreviation for those states, but it was too late.''
Both Ankit and George Silva of Grant Middle School reached the tiebreaker round competing against 15 youths for a shot at the finals, said sponsor Sally Daly, a history teacher at Baker Middle School.
But even though they didn't win, it was the first time CCISD students made it that far in the competition, Daly said.
Peter Borhauer of Calallen Middle School was the city's third contestant in the state competition.
The bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society, deals with current events, culture and economics, as well as locations on the map.
"I think they did extremely well,'' Daly said. "There was a preponderance of kids from Dallas and Fort Worth and they beat a lot of kids from Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio."
"Next year, though, I think we'll start preparing earlier.''
Ankit said he was pleased with his performance.
"I answered a lot of challenging questions,'' he said. "Everything from the staple crops of different regions to the types of volcanoes.''
