It's salsa time in Corpus Christi, as Univision's popular Latino dance show, "Caliente," sets the stage at the USS Inchon and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi this weekend.
The city's ocean view, military ties and warm personality are sure to be a spectacular backdrop for the one-hour programs that broadcast beginning next month, said "Caliente" producer Angel Aponte.
The show at the Inchon will air May 27, and the university will be featured Aug. 12 on the Spanish-language network. Both will be aired locally on KORO Univision 28.
"Corpus Christi is a great location," Aponte said Friday as he prepared the Inchon's flight deck for its show time today. "You have the only university on an island. And the military, it's so perfect. The military is so sealed. It is so mysterious. You don't get very many opportunities to see the military at work. I think the audience will like that. We're all excited."
Navy officials have said exposure on the country's largest Spanish-language network would be a tremendous asset in recruitment effort with Hispanics. And A&M-Corpus Christi administrators have said featuring the university on a national network could help its recruiting, as well.
Univision reaches 1.7 million adults ages 18 to 49 during primetime, ranking fifth behind NBC, Fox, ABC and CBS. Both the university and the Navy will have promotional spots during the broadcast.
"For a lot of people even in Corpus Christi, Ingleside is out of people's sight," said Capt. Dan Hartwell, commanding officer of the Inchon.
"If it's out of sight, it's out of mind. This is a good chance to show off."
There are 180 dancers confirmed to appear this weekend, when tapings will run each day from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Of those, about 150 are likely to show up at the Inchon on Saturday, Aponte said, and maybe at least 80 for Sunday's taping at the university. Miami-based Univision, local KORO 28 and the military have cleared each dancer, Aponte said.
Akinwole Akinfenwa, one of the almost 20 sailors who will appear in plain clothes on the Inchon show, said aside from showing what his home ship has to offer, he is looking forward to an action-filled party.
"It's a great show," Akinfenwa said. "You see people having fun. That's what it's all about. This is where I work. To show it off to people, to have people come out here and have them see what we do, is very good."
